ABSTRACT Introduction: Lung diseases are common in patients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD), making differential diagnosis with COVID-19 a challenge. This study describes pulmonary chest tomography (CT) findings in hospitalized ESKD patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT) with clinical suspicion of COVID-19. Methods: ESKD individuals referred to emergency department older than 18 years with clinical suspicion of COVID-19 were recruited. Epidemiological baseline clinical information was extracted from electronic health records. Pulmonary CT was classified as typical, indeterminate, atypical or negative. We then compared the CT findings of positive and negative COVID-19 patients. Results: We recruited 109 patients (62.3% COVID-19-positive) between March and December 2020, mean age 60 ± 12.5 years, 43% female. The most common etiology of ESKD was diabetes. Median time on dialysis was 36 months, interquartile range = 12-84. The most common pulmonary lesion on CT was ground glass opacities. Typical CT pattern was more common in COVID-19 patients (40 (61%) vs 0 (0%) in non-COVID-19 patients, p < 0.001). Sensitivity was 60.61% (40/66) and specificity was 100% (40/40). Positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 100% and 62.3%, respectively. Atypical CT pattern was more frequent in COVID-19-negative patients (9 (14%) vs 24 (56%) in COVID-19-positive, p < 0.001), while the indeterminate pattern was similar in both groups (13 (20%) vs 6 (14%), p = 0.606), and negative pattern was more common in COVID-19-negative patients (4 (6%) vs 12 (28%), p = 0.002). Conclusions: In hospitalized ESKD patients on RRT, atypical chest CT pattern cannot adequately rule out the diagnosis of COVID-19.


RESUMO Introdução: Doenças pulmonares são comuns em pacientes com doença renal em estágio terminal (DRET), dificultando o diagnóstico diferencial com COVID-19. Este estudo descreve achados de tomografia computadorizada de tórax (TC) em pacientes com DRET em terapia renal substitutiva (TRS) hospitalizados com suspeita de COVID-19. Métodos: Indivíduos maiores de 18 anos com DRET, encaminhados ao pronto-socorro com suspeita de COVID-19 foram incluídos. Dados clínicos e epidemiológicos foram extraídos de registros eletrônicos de saúde. A TC foi classificada como típica, indeterminada, atípica, negativa. Comparamos achados tomográficos de pacientes com COVID-19 positivos e negativos. Resultados: Recrutamos 109 pacientes (62,3% COVID-19-positivos) entre março e dezembro de 2020, idade média de 60 ± 12,5 anos, 43% mulheres. A etiologia mais comum da DRET foi diabetes. Tempo médio em diálise foi 36 meses, intervalo interquartil = 12-84. A lesão pulmonar mais comum foi opacidades em vidro fosco. O padrão típico de TC foi mais comum em pacientes com COVID-19 (40 (61%) vs. 0 (0%) em pacientes sem COVID-19, p < 0,001). Sensibilidade 60,61% (40/66), especificidade 100% (40/40). Valores preditivos positivos e negativos foram 100% e 62,3%, respectivamente. Padrão atípico de TC foi mais frequente em pacientes COVID-19-negativos (9 (14%) vs. 24 (56%) em COVID-19-positivos, p < 0,001), enquanto padrão indeterminado foi semelhante em ambos os grupos (13 (20%) vs. 6 (14%), p = 0,606), e padrão negativo foi mais comum em pacientes COVID-19-negativos (4 (6%) vs. 12 (28%), p = 0,002). Conclusões: Em pacientes com DRET em TRS hospitalizados, um padrão atípico de TC de tórax não pode excluir adequadamente o diagnóstico de COVID-19.

Introduction: The human umbilical artery (HUA), rat-isolated right atrium, and rat-isolated vas deferens present a basal release of 6-nitrodopamine (6-ND). The basal release of 6-ND from these tissues was significantly decreased (but not abolished) when the tissues were pre-incubated with Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). Methods: In this study, the effect of the pharmacological modulation of the redox environment on the basal release of 6-ND was investigated. The basal release of 6-ND was measured using Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results and Discussion: Pre-incubation (30 min) of the tissues with GKT137831 (1 µM) caused a significant increase in the basal release of 6-ND from all tissues. In the HUA, pre-incubation with diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) (100 µM) also caused significant increases in the basal release of 6-ND. Preincubation of the HUA with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (100 µM) increased 6-ND basal release, whereas pre-incubation with catalase (1,000 U/mL) significantly decreased it. Pre-incubation of the HUA with superoxide dismutase (SOD) (250 U/mL; 30 min) also significantly increased the basal release of 6-ND. Preincubation of the HUA with either allopurinol (100 µM) or uric acid (1 mM) had no effect on the basal release of 6-ND. Pre-treatment of the HUA with L-NAME (100 µM) prevented the increase in the basal release of 6-ND induced by GKT137831, diphenyleneiodonium, and H2O2. The results obtained indicate a major role of endogenous H2O2 and peroxidases as modulators of 6- ND biosynthesis/release and a lack of peroxynitrite contribution.

OBJECTIVES: Polygenic scores (PGS) for sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms in an epidemiological cohort were contrasted. The overlap between genes assigned to variants that compose the PGS predictions was tested to explore the shared genetic bases of sleep problems and depressive symptoms. METHODS: PGS analysis was performed on the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO, N = 1042), an adult epidemiological sample. A genome wide association study (GWAS) for depression grounded the PGS calculations for Beck Depression Index (BDI), while insomnia GWAS based the PGS for Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Pearson's correlation was applied to contrast PGS and clinical scores. Fisher's Exact and Benjamin-Hochberg tests were used to verify the overlaps between PGS-associated genes and the pathways enriched among their intersections. RESULTS: All PGS models were significant when individuals were divided as cases or controls according to BDI (R2 = 1.2%, p = 0.00026), PSQI (R2 = 3.3%, p = 0.007) and ISI (R2 = 3.4%, p = 0.021) scales. When clinical scales were used as continuous variables, the PGS models for BDI (R2 = 1.5%, p = 0.0004) and PSQI scores (R2 = 3.3%, p = 0.0057) reached statistical significance. PSQI and BDI scores were correlated, and the same observation was applied to their PGS. Genes assigned to variants that compose the best-fit PGS predictions for sleep quality and depressive symptoms were significantly overlapped. Pathways enriched among the intersect genes are related to synapse function. CONCLUSIONS: The genetic bases of sleep quality and depressive symptoms are correlated; their implicated genes are significantly overlapped and converge on neural pathways. This data suggests that sleep complaints accompanying depressive symptoms are not secondary issues, but part of the core mental illness.

Background: Mother's own milk (MOM) provides health benefits for infants with very low birth weight (VLBW). This study aimed to describe the incidence and factors associated with low volumes of MOM (<50% of total diet volume) at discharge for VLBW infants. Methods: A prospective cohort study of infants with VLBW and gestational age of <30 weeks, who survived to discharge and had no contraindication to MOM. We conducted bivariate analyses to investigate associations with the volume of MOM at discharge, using chi-square, t, and Mann-Whitney tests. All p-value analyses were two-tailed. The variables significantly associated with "low volumes of MOM" entered the multivariable analysis. Univariate and multivariate relative risk (confidence interval [CI] 95%) estimates were obtained from Poisson regression with a robust estimate of variance and controlled by the length of hospital stay. Results: Of 414 infants included and followed until discharge, 32.9% (n = 136) received less than 50% of the total daily volume of MOM. This outcome was associated with gestational age <28 weeks, lower birth weight, multiple births, developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and longer lengths of stay. After Poisson regression, low volumes of MOM at discharge were associated only with being born multiples (RR 2.01; CI 95% 1.53-2.64, p < 0.001) and with longer length of stay (RR 1.07; CI 95% 1.01-1.14, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Most VLBW infants were discharged home receiving predominantly MOM. Each neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) should acknowledge which clinical characteristics of mothers and VLBW infants are associated with difficulties maintaining MOM volumes until discharge.

PURPOSE: Biological factors and mechanisms that drive higher prevalence of insomnia in females are poorly understood. This study focused on the neurological consequences of X-chromosome functional imbalances between sexes. METHODS: Benefited from publicly available large-scale genetic, transcriptional and epigenomic data, we curated and contrasted different gene lists: (1) X-liked genes, including assignments for X-chromosome inactivation patterns and disease associations; (2) sleep-associated genes; (3) gene expression markers for the suprachiasmatic nucleus. RESULTS: We show that X-linked markers for the suprachiasmatic nucleus are significantly enriched for clinically relevant genes in the context of rare genetic syndromes and brain waves modulation. CONCLUSION: Considering female-specific patterns on brain transcriptional programs becomes essential when designing health care strategies for mental and sleep illnesses with sex bias in prevalence.

This study explores the utilization of adsorption and advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) using a green functionalized carbon nanotube (MWCNT-OH/COOH-E) as adsorbent and catalyst material. The stability and catalytic activity of the solid material were proved by FT-IR and TG/DTG, which also helped to elucidate the reaction mechanisms. In adsorption kinetic studies, both antibiotics showed similar behavior, with an equilibrium at 30 min and 60% removal. The adsorption kinetic data of both antibiotics were well described by the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. Different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were used, and the photolytic degradation was not satisfactory, whereas heterogeneous photocatalysis showed high degradation (⁓ 70%), both processes with 30 min of reaction. Nevertheless, ozonation and catalytic ozonation have resulted in the highest efficiencies, 90%, and 70%, respectively, after 30-min reaction. For AOP data modeling, the first-order model better described CIP and OFL in photocatalytic and ozonation process. Intermediates were detected by MS-MS analysis, such as P313, P330, and P277 for ciprofloxacin and P391 and P332 for ofloxacin. The toxicity test demonstrated that a lower acute toxicity was observed for the photocatalysis method samples, with only 3.1 and 1.5 TU for CIP and OFL, respectively, thus being a promising method for its degradation, due to its lower risk of inducing the proliferation of bacterial resistance in an aquatic environment. Ultimately, the analysis of MWCNT reusability showed good performance for 2 cycles and regeneration of MWCNT with ozone confirmed its effectiveness up to 3 cycles.

BACKGROUND: Yoga can be used as a complementary intervention to conventional treatments, whether pharmacological or non-pharmacological. Sustained practice of yoga can generate a series of benefits for individuals' quality of life and improve their physical fitness. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential effects of yoga as an adjunct intervention in conditions involving impulse control issues, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline personality disorder, bipolar affective disorder, and substance use disorders. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of placebo-controlled, randomized trials of yoga in patients with impulsivity. PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases were searched for trials published up to January, 2023. Data were extracted from published reports and quality assessment was performed per Cochrane recommendations. RESULTS: Out of 277 database results, 6 RCT were included in this systematic review. To assess the level of attention and impulsiveness, the following scales were analyzed: Barratt Impulsiveness, UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior scale, Conners' Continuous Performance Test IIª and Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Long. CONCLUSIONS: Yoga didn't have a significant improvement in impulsivity when compared to placebo. There are many tools to assess impulsivity, but they mean different concepts and domains consisting in a weakness on comparison of yoga effects. PROSPERO REGISTRATION: CRD42023389088.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is characterised by increases in prostate volume and contraction. Downregulation of the nitric oxide (NO)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signalling pathway contributes to prostate dysfunctions. Previous studies in cancer cells or vessels have shown that the epigenetic mechanisms control the gene and protein expression of the enzymes involved in the production of NO and cGMP. This study is aimed to evaluate the effect of a 2-week treatment of 5-azacytidine (5-AZA), a DNA-methyltransferase inhibitor, in the prostate function of mice fed with a high-fat diet. Functional, histological, biochemical and molecular assays were carried out. Obese mice presented greater prostate weight, α-actin expression and contractile response induced by the α-1adrenoceptors agonist. The relaxation induced by the NO-donor and the protein expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) were significantly decreased in the prostate of obese mice. The treatment with 5-AZA reverted the higher expression of α-actin, reduced the hypercontractility state of the prostate and increased the expression of eNOS and sGC and intraprostatic levels of cGMP. When prostates from obese mice treated with 5-AZA were incubated in vitro with inhibitors of the NOS or sGC, the inhibitory effect of 5-AZA was reverted, therefore, showing the involvement of NO and cGMP. In conclusion, our study paves the way to develop or repurpose therapies that recover the expression of eNOS and sGC and, hence, to improve prostate function in BPH.

The stimulation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) with inflammatory molecules is often used to boost their therapeutic effect. Prolonged exposure to inflammatory molecules has been explored to improve their action because MSCs therapies seem to be improved transiently with such stimuli. However, the possibility of cyclically stimulating MSCs to recover their optimized therapeutic potential is still to be elucidated, although the efficacy of cell-based therapies may be dependent on the ability to readapt to the relapse pathological conditions. Here, the response of MSCs, encapsulated in alginate hydrogels and cultured for 22 d, is explored using three different regimes: single, continuous, and intermittent stimulation with IFNγ. Exposure to IFNγ leads to a decrease in the secretion of IL-10, which is cyclically countered by IFNγ weaning. Conditioned media collected at different stages of pulsatile stimulation show an immunomodulatory potential toward macrophages, which directly correlates with IL-10 concentration in media. To understand whether the correlation between cyclic stimulation of MSCs and other biological actions can be observed, the effect on endothelial cells is studied, showcasing an overall modest influence on tube formation. Overall, the results describe the response of encapsulated MSCs to unusual pulsatile simulation regimens, exploring encapsulated MSCs as a living on-demand release system of tailored secretomes with recoverable immunomodulatory action.

The topical use of sunscreens is recommended for avoiding the damaging effects of UV radiation. However, improvements are still needed in the existing products to enhance their photoprotection effectiveness and safety. This involves minimizing the use of chemical UV filters while providing enhanced and prolonged photoprotection. This work investigated novel sunscreen formulations and their UV protection effects by encapsulating Uvinul® A, Tinosorb® S, and Uvinul® T150 into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) based on bacuri butter and raspberry seed oil. First, the impact of critical formulation and process parameters on NLCs' particle size was evaluated using a 22 Face Centered Central Composite Design. Then, formulations were evaluated in terms of critical quality factors, in vitro skin permeation, and in vitro and in vivo photoprotection activities. The developed NLCs-containing formulations exhibited appropriate size (122-135 nm), PdI (<0.3), encapsulation efficiency (>90%), and drug content (>80%), which were preserved for at least 90 days under different stability conditions. Moreover, these NLCs-based formulations had equivalent skin permeation to emulsion-based controls, and the addition of NLCs into sunscreen cream bases in the optimum proportion of 20% (w/w) resulted in enhanced UVA and UVB photoprotection levels, despite a 10% reduction in the total filters content. Altogether, these results describe the application of nanoencapsulated organic UV filters in innovative sunscreen formulations to achieve superior photoprotection and cosmeceutical properties.

Obesity results from an energy imbalance and has been considered an epidemic due to its increasing rates worldwide. It is classified as a low-grade chronic inflammatory disease and has associated comorbidities. Different nutritional strategies are used for the purpose of weight loss, highlighting low-carbohydrate (LC) diets, ketogenic diets, and intermittent fasting (IF). These strategies can lead to metabolic and behavioral changes as they stimulate different biochemical pathways. Therefore, this study evaluated memory, energy metabolism, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defense parameters in mice subjected to an LC diet, ketogenic diet (KD), or IF. Eighty male Swiss mice, 60 days old, were divided into 4 groups: control, LC, KD, or IF. Body weight was measured weekly, and food intake every 48 h. After 15 days of nutritional interventions, the animals were subjected to the behavioral object recognition test and subsequently euthanized. Then, visceral fat was removed and weighed, and the brain was isolated for inflammatory and biochemical analysis. We concluded from this study that the LC and KD strategies could damage memory, IF improves the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and the LC, KD, and IF strategies do not lead to neuroinflammatory damage but present damage at the level of oxidative stress.

Sleep is crucial for memory, as it promotes its encoding, consolidation, storage, and retrieval. Sleep periods following learning enhance memory consolidation. Leptin, a hormone that regulates appetite and energy balance, also influences memory and neuroplasticity. It plays a neurotrophic role in the hippocampus, enhancing synaptic function and promoting memory processes. Given these associations between sleep, memory, and leptin, this study aimed to evaluate the interplay between sleep quality, memory complaints and leptin levels. Using data from the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO) 2007 edition, we analyzed data from 881 participants who underwent evaluations for subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), memory function (Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire), body mass index and plasmatic leptin levels. After confirming that subjects with poor sleep quality had more memory complaints in our cohort, we observed that leptin levels were increased in individuals with more memory complaints, but there was no association between leptin levels and sleep quality. Mediation analysis reinforced the direct effect of sleep quality on memory function, but leptin had no indirect effect as mediator over the sleep-memory association. Moderation analysis revealed that leptin acted as a moderator in the relationship between sleep quality and memory, with increased leptin levels enhancing the effect of sleep quality over memory function. These findings underscore the intricate interplay between sleep, memory, and metabolic factors like leptin, shedding light on potential mechanisms through which sleep influences memory and cognitive functions. Further research is needed to elucidate the exact mechanisms underlying these relationships and their implications for overall health and well-being.

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematological malignancy. Current treatments, based on intensive chemotherapy regimens provide overall survival rates of ~85% in children and <50% in adults, calling the search of new therapeutic options. We previously reported that targeting the T cell receptor (TCR) in T-ALL with anti-CD3 (CD3) mAbs enforces a molecular program akin to thymic negative selection, a major developmental checkpoint in normal T-cell development, induces leukemic cell death and impairs leukemia progression to ultimately improve host survival. However, CD3 monotherapy resulted in relapse. To find out actionable targets able to re-enforce leukemic cells vulnerability to CD3 mAbs, including the clinically relevant Teplizumab, we identified the molecular program induced by CD3 mAbs in PDXs-derived from T-ALL cases. Using large-scale transcriptomic analysis, we found prominent expression of TNF, LT and multiple components of the "TNF⍺ via NFκB signaling" pathway in anti-CD3-treated T-ALL. We show in vivo that Etanercept, a sink for TNF/LTenhancesCD3 anti-leukemic properties, indicating that TNF/TNFR survival pathways interferes with TCR-induced leukemic cell death. However, suppression of TNF-mediated survival and switch to TNFR-mediated cell death through inhibition of c-IAP1/2 with the SMAC mimetic Birinapant synergized with -CD3 to impair leukemia expansion in a RIPK1-dependent manner and improve mice survival. Thus, our results advocate the use of either TNFa/LTa inhibitors, or Birinapant/other SMAC mimetics to improve anti-CD3 immunotherapy in T-ALL.

CONCLUSIONS: In hospitalized ESKD patients on RRT, atypical chest CT pattern cannot adequately rule out the diagnosis of COVID-19.

PURPOSE: Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of the menstrual cycle stages, especially menses, on sleep, inflammatory mediators, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. METHODS: We used data from the EPISONO study cohort, selecting 96 women who had undergone one-night polysomnography. The women were distributed in three groups according to the time point of the menstrual cycle on the polysomnography night: menses, mid/late follicular phase, and luteal phase. The volunteers completed questionnaires related to sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Blood samples were collected to analyze interleukin 6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and C-reactive protein. RESULTS: Sleep efficiency was statistically higher in women in the mid/late follicular group (89.9% ± 9.6) compared to menstrual (83.0% ± 10.8) and luteal (83.7% ± 12.7) groups. The mid/late follicular group presented a statistically significant reduction in sleep onset latency (7.1 ± 7.1 min) compared to the menstrual (22.3 ± 32.4 min) and luteal groups (15.9 ± 14.7 min). No statistical differences among the three groups were observed in other polysomnographic parameters, inflammatory mediators, daytime sleepiness, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that the mid/late follicular phase might be beneficial for women's sleep, although there were no statistically changes in inflammatory mediators among the groups.

Pogo transposable element-derived protein with ZNF domain (POGZ) gene encodes a chromatin regulator and rare variants on this gene have been associated with a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as White-Sutton syndrome. Patient clinical manifestations frequently include developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder and obesity. Sleep disturbances are also commonly observed in these patients, yet the biological pathways which link sleep traits to the POGZ-associated syndrome remain unclear. We screened for sleep implications among individuals with causative POGZ variants previously described. Sleep disturbances were observed in 52% of patients, and being obese was not observed as a risk factor for sleep problems. Next, we identified genes associated with sleep-associated traits among the POGZ regulatory targets, aiming to uncover the molecular pathways that, when disrupted by POGZ loss of function, contribute to the aetiology of sleep phenotypes in these patients. The intersect between POGZ targets and sleep-related genes was used in a pathway enrichment analysis. Relevant pathways among these overlapping genes are involved in the regulation of circadian rhythm, tau protein binding, ATPase activator activity. This study may represent the beginning for novel functional investigations on shared molecular mechanisms between sleep disturbances and rare developmental syndromes related to POGZ and its regulatory targets.

Medical adhesives are emerging as an important clinical tool as adjuvants for sutures and staples in wound closure and healing and in the achievement of hemostasis. However, clinical adhesives combining cytocompatibility, as well as strong and stable adhesion in physiological conditions, are still in demand. Herein, a mussel-inspired strategy is explored to produce adhesive coacervates using tannic acid (TA) and methacrylate pullulan (PUL-MA). TA|PUL-MA coacervates mainly comprise van der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions. The methacrylic groups in the PUL backbone increase the number of interactions in the adhesives matrix, resulting in enhanced cohesion and adhesion strength (72.7 Jm-2 ), compared to the non-methacrylated coacervate. The adhesive properties are kept in physiologic-mimetic solutions (72.8 Jm-2 ) for 72 h. The photopolymerization of TA|PUL-MA enables the on-demand detachment of the adhesive. The poor cytocompatibility associated with the use of phenolic groups is here circumvented by mixing reactive oxygen species-degrading enzyme in the adhesive coacervate. This addition does not hamper the adhesive character of the materials, nor their anti-microbial or hemostatic properties. This affordable and straightforward methodology, together with the tailorable adhesivity even in wet environments, high cytocompatibility, and anti-bacterial activity, enables foresee TA|PUL-MA as a promising ready-to-use bioadhesive for biomedical applications.

Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation, present in sunlight, can induce cell redox imbalance leading to cellular damage and even cell death, compromising skin health. Here, we evaluated the in vitro antioxidant and photochemoprotective effect of dithiothreitol (DTT). DTT neutralized the free radicals 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS·+), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·), and superoxide anion (O2·-) in in vitro assays, as well as the ferric ion (Fe3+) in the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay. We also evaluated the effect of DTT pre-treatment in L929 dermal fibroblasts and DTT (50 and 100 µM) led to greater cell viability following UVA-irradiation compared to cells that were untreated. Furthermore, the pre-treatment of cells with DTT prevented the increase of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation, and DNA condensation, as well as the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm), that occurred following irradiation in untreated cells. The endogenous antioxidant system of cells was also improved in irradiated cells that were DTT pre-treated compared to the untreated cells, as the activity of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes remained as high as non-irradiated cells, while the activity levels were depleted in the untreated irradiated cells. Furthermore, DTT reduced necrosis in UVA-irradiated fibroblasts. Together, these results showed that DTT may have promising use in the prevention of skin photoaging and photodamage induced by UVA, as it provided photochemoprotection against the harmful effects of this radiation, reducing oxidative stress and cell death, due mainly to its antioxidant capacity.
